Best ever knit baby sweater

This little baby sweater is so satisfying to make that I have made about fifty of them, varying the pattern each time. Let me tell you why I love this little pattern.

1.You can use sports weight or knitting worsted weight
2.You use large needles. Size 6,7,or8
3It goes fast. I can knit it easily in a week.
4You can make it with the hood attached or with a matching hat
5.There is no sewing it together. When you are through knitting all you have to do is take about 4 stitches under the arm and sew on the buttons.
6.You can knit it in plain stockinette stitch, any fancy knit pattern, or using colors in aran island


HOODED BABY SWEATER


Sizes 6 (12 18) months
Materials: 150 grams or 5 ounces sport or knitting worsted weight yarn
Knitting needles: US size 6 or 7,one pair size 5, and double pointed needles size 6 or 7
Guage: 5 sts or 7 rows to an inch


With smaller needles cast on 49 (53 55) sts. K 10 rows for garter st. border. Change to larger needles. work in stockinette st. to 5 (6 6) inches end on wrong side.
Shape back of hood. K 31 (35 37) sl1, k1,turn.
Row 1.sl 1, p13 (17 19), p 2 tog, turn
Row 2. sl1, k13 (17 19), sl1, k1, psso, turn
Repeat rows 1 and 2 nine more times, then row 1, leaving 6 sts. unworked at each side.
Row 22. sl1, k13 (17 19),sl1, k2 tog, psso, turn
row 23. sl1, p13 (17 19) p3 tog, turn
Repeat last 2 rows until 15 (19 21)sts remain.Leave these sts on needle, cut off yarn.
Turn 1 inch of garter st border back on right side, tack in place at each side. With free needle
on right side, starting at front edge and going through double thickness, pick up and k 16 sts on lower edge of hood, k the 15 (19 21) sts on needle, decreasing 3 sts evenly, pick up and k 16 sts on other side. 44 (48 50) sts. Row 1, k1 p1 acr0ss
Row 2. k1 p1 *yo k2 tog repeat from *to last 2 sts.k1 p1
Row 3: *k1 p1 repeat from* across, cast on 5 sts at end of row 49 (53 55) sts
Row 4: k across, cast on 5 sts at end of row. 54 (58 60) sts
Shape raglan yoke: Row 1, wrong side.k 5 for garter st border, p7 (8 9)for right front. place marker on needle, p5 for sleeve, place marker on needle, p 20 (22 22)for back, place marker on needle,p to last 5 sts. k5 for left front garter st border.
Increase row:*k to 1 st before marker, inc 1 st in next st, slip marker,inc 1 st in next st, repeat from * three more times, k to end. 8 sts increased.
Buttonhole row:for boy, k5, p to last 5 sts. k1, k2 tog and yo for buttonhole,k2
for girl:k2 yo k2 tog for buttonhole, k1, p to last 5 sts k5.
Row 4: Repeat inc row.
Row 5:k5, p to last 5 sts., k5
Working a buttonhole on every 12th row, repeat rows 4 and 5 until there are 166(1778 188)
sts., end with an increase row.
Divide Stitches: work 26(28 30) sts and slip them onto a holder for right front, p 33(35 37)
and leave them on needle for the right sleeve, p48(52 54) sts and slip them on a holder for the back, p 33(35 37) and leave them on needle for left sleeve, slip remaining sts. on a holder for the left front.
Sleeves: working on left sleeve, divide sts. onto the double pointed needles,cast on two sts at the beginning and the end, connect so that it is a tube, work to 5(51/2 6) inches from the underarm,
decrease 6 sts evenly across on next row,rib k1 p1 for 7 rows and bind off. Work other sleeve to correspond.
Body: Join yarn at left sleeve underarm. On wrong side work across the left front.cast on four . sts., k across the back, cast on four sts.,k across the right front.
Continue the garter st borders and the buttonholes on 108(116 122) sts until 51/2(6 61/2) inches below underarm. Rib for 7 rows. Cast off.
Make a neck cord of chain sts 30 inches long. Weave through eyelets. Make pom poms for the ends of the chain.
